Google Plans to Index Tweets in Real Time, Impact on SEO Marketing
The two social media giants Google and Twitter have joined hands to change the virtual world yet again. In this new deal, Twitter has given Google access to its ‘Firehose’ that is, to its real-time tweets.
What does it mean for Google and Twitter?
Well, for Twitter it will mean a bigger audience now. Since the deal, Twitter has seen a considerable increase in traffic. As for Google, it will have direct and first-hand access to all tweets all the time instead of earlier times when it had to crawl its way through Twitter for the information.
We think it is a great deal for both the giants and for your business or website as well regarding SEO.
How will this affect the Social Media Marketing?
As soon as the deal was announced we are sure all the major SEO agencies and digital marketing companies called an emergency meeting to understand its impact on the future work.
The whole digital marketing strategy was reconsidered and re-planned. As after this partnership every user and their comments, updates and views are on high visibility through google search engine. So be careful about what you tweet!
But How? How will Google index so many tweets? What are its criteria?
This is something which has been could have many people bothered, and almost the whole SEO community has been talking about it. Google has been unclear on how it will index those 140 characters. This won’t stop the SEO mavericks from reverse engineering in trying to understand the algorithm changes better. We have been following them and trying to understand the impact it will have on our client’s SEO marketing strategy.
Though Google is still working on its indexing criteria here is what we have understood up until now:
The higher number of favorite tweets you have, the more are your chances of showing up on google index.
The same goes for retweets. The more the retweets, the better your chances.
The number of followers is another criteria that seem to boost your ranking in Google indexing.
The most important criteria have a verified Twitter account with social authority.
But will having a verified account with lots of retweets and followers guarantee a good SEO?
Google keeps changing its criteria for indexing. Initially, this study showed that the number of followers was the most important criteria as per google indexing. In more recent studies that influence has dropped considerably.
Another study revealed that the number of favorite tweets had better chances in indexing compared to the retweets. This may be due to a large number of accounts with auto retweets from influential people. This means that a tweet with more than 1000 favorites is more likely to get a higher chance of getting indexed than a tweet with more than a 1000 retweets.
Should you start worrying or working?
Worry won’t solve anything. So it’s better to start working.
Google has made this pretty clear that it is not interested in indexing every tweet. It will continue to concentrate what is essential and holds value to the user.
To make your tweets visible in google search will take time and planning. We have to work hard to gain authority on Twitter. This will happen by gathering a real following and nourishing the relations with engaging and relevant tweets.
To increase your social authority on twitter is not just about increasing your follower count. It is measured by Moz’ Followerwonk tool which takes into account the level of engagement for a particular tweet and the authority level of the people who are engaged with that twitter user.
Finally, what to do to improve your SEO in light of Google-Twitter Deal?
The first thing to do is understand that gaining authority on Twitter won’t happen overnight. You’ll have to take a long-term view and continuously work on the process.
- Start with making an account on twitter if you don’t already have one.
- Start making relevant and valuable tweets according to your strategy and niche.
- Increase your follower count gradually with more verified and relevant users than spam accounts.
- Do not worry about retweets or favorites. If your tweets are relevant, it will gain value automatically.
This whole process has to be repeated over and over to have better chances to show up on Google search.
