Google Is Experimenting With A New Local “Business Card”

Google is at it again! Considerable changes being tested

Google is experimenting with a new “local business card.”  Google is considering using custom content that is outside the normal channels.  The content from local business will be placed at the top of search results, and it will include graphics, animations and images provided by the business.

Google has never before allowed images to be displayed on the search results page.  Only a few dozen businesses have been asked by Google to take part in this pilot, but if successful, will expand to thousands of local business.

The changes were created primarily with the mobile user in mind, but a desktop user will benefit as well.   The “business cards” will be located and positioned differently when displayed.  However, these changes and additions will not dramatically change functionality.  Google built the changes to use the existing display functions.

They made this change after implementing “Candidate Cards” recently.  Overall, the new “business card” feature could prove quite significant for local SEO and depending how it shakes out, may alter PPC (Pay-per-click) advertising.

The idea behind the change is to allow the business owner to communicate directly with users through the search results.  Local businesses are able to choose what content and services get promoted, as well as visual previews and promotional information. Users are able to scroll through the list of  business cards which are also centered around the key word or phrase that was searched. Google’s “business cards” are displayed solely based on the popularity of the business and the reviews.

While Google is still experimenting, only local businesses will be affected by this change. We will be watching and responding immediately to any future changes. At this juncture, we don’t know what changes are in the pipeline, but should this change become fixed; we are already anticipating the cost ramifications to the business owner.

At Results Driven Marketing, LLC, we are watching every move made by Google, Bing and the other major advertising platforms. We stay ahead and anticipate how changes impact your buying/advertising strategy.  It is not yet clear whether Google will move forward as these tests are being conducted, but we assure you that more changes are in store.

Google Discontinues Right Hand Sidebar Ads

It’s Official, Google is Discontinuing Sidebar Ads

As of February 19, 2016, Google is no longer going to be showing right hand “sidebar” ads which currently appear to the right of its search results.  Instead, it will only place ads at either the top and/or bottom of the page and will apply to all searches in all languages worldwide. This change comes with two exceptions: ads in the Knowledge Panel will not be affected nor will Product Listing Ad (PLA) boxes, which will continue to be located either above or to the right of the search results.

In addition, Google has indicated that it may show an additional fourth ad, as opposed to its customary three ads, which are located above the search results for what it calls “highly commercial queries.”

In fact, according to Google’s official statement on the change, “We’ve been testing this layout for a long time, so some people might see it on a very small number of commercial queries. We’ll continue to make tweaks, but this is designed for highly commercial queries where the layout is able to provide more relevant results for people searching and better performance for advertisers.”
